Continuing/Professional Education

The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities can work with a number of professional groups to provide continuing education credits in whatever format you need. Though we have several classes and workshops that are already known to be relevant, we are flexible and can tailor the program to your group’s needs, interests, location, time restraints, and credentialing requirements. We also make certain that our programs are interesting, practical, and fun. Just let us know your needs and goals and we will work with you to design and implement what works best for you.

Clergy

Drawing from our resources in religious studies, ethics, history, and our on-site chaplains, we can design a program for you in a wide variety of faith traditions, ministry concerns, and issues in counseling.

Educators

Teachers and school administrators can satisfy continuing education requirements with valuable workshops not only on civic and social issues related to medicine and technology, but also cultural diversity, poverty simulations, critical thinking for children, qualitative research, healthcare education, health and fitness psychology, financial psychology, and moral psychology (factual, empirical studies of how morality develops from childhood to adulthood and how moral decisions are made).

Lawyers/legal professionals

Continuing legal education credits can be earned not only in the areas of ethics and changing healthcare regulations, but also in learning about the remarkable new host of legal issues created by new medical technologies, automation, artificial intelligence, and predictive biotesting. This is not just relevant for lawyers who work in healthcare directly, but for anyone interested how new technologies can affect commerce, business, employment law, and criminal law. In particular, the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities has expertise in neuroscience and law - both civil and criminal.

Physician/health care professionals

Continuing education for any health care professional can be made to order. While ethics, medical law, and medical history are staples of our continuing education offerings, we can also provide new and interesting material on how to understand changes in health care and society (how online medicine and genetic testing affect patient expectations, how the medical consumerist model changes relationships), how to work with particular religious patient populations, and moral psychology in the medical realm (including the psychology of physician/patient interaction, how to improve communication, and how to minimize malpractice claims).

Psychotherapists/counselors

Professional therapists can earn continuing education credits not only by learning about new research and ethics, but also about therapeutic techniques that incorporate the arts and humanities (art, music, and drama therapy, narrative medicine, phenomenology of illness), about philosophical and neuroscientific debates concerning DSM categories, new ICD-11 diagnoses, and research in moral psychology and moral emotion, and even about the new field of clinical financial psychology - fields in which the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities has expertise.
